Becoming a Pastry Chef – Schooling

If you are creative and enjoy cooking and working with your hands then you might be interested in becoming a pastry chef. There is so much more involved in training to be a pastry chef than cooking alone. A pastry chef has to be extremely organized, disciplined and creative. It is not solely about the cooking and how the food tastes. It is also about the presentation of the food and how beautiful it looks.

If you are serious about pursuing a career as a pastry chef, you have three educational choices. The first choice you have is to get your certificate or diploma in less than a year from a culinary/pastry school. The next choice you have is to go and get your associates degree. This should take you about two years to complete. If you think that you may eventually want to become an executive pastry chef you should look into getting your Bachelors or an advanced degree.

When you are searching for a degree program or certificate program, there are three very important things that you need to look for. You need to inquire about the facilities where you will be learning how to cook, the accreditation of the program and the faculty that will be teaching you.

The facility you learn in should be a kitchen with professional equipment as well as industry standard cooking equipment. The faculty members that will be instructing you and guiding you through your training should have a great education as well as a great deal of hands on experience in the industry. The last thing that you need to check before enrolling in a certificate or diploma pastry chef program is that the program has the proper accreditation. In the culinary world, this means that you are looking for accreditation from American Culinary Federation, Cordon Bleu or other accreditations that are well recognized.

Becoming a pastry chef will take a lot of work, but the career is very rewarding and if you are good and get taken on by a bigger restaurant, the pay can be very good too.
