2 Reasons You Should Break in Baseball Gloves

Anything made of padded leather is generally stiff as a board right out of the box. Baseball gloves are no exception to this rule as they are generally made with specialized leathers and polyesters. Most baseball players have a personalized method for breaking in their baseball glove but many of the newer players look at them funny when they talk about it. If you’re new to the sport and haven’t experienced the aches and pains of an unbroken glove you might find the processes unnecessary but that’s where you are wrong.

There are two main reasons you want to always break in a new baseball glove before taking it out onto the field. It doesn’t matter how flimsy, cheap, or smooth the baseball glove feels to you at first touch, you must break it in. Not only can you botch a baseball game with errors caused by a stiff glove but you can also seriously damage your hand in the process. Don’t let that happen.

The first major concern for breaking in baseball gloves comes from injury. When you use an unbroken glove during a game you are forced to put added strain on your hand when closing the glove around the ball. If you even manage to catch the ball without a developed pocket you will seriously struggle to keep the glove closed, as it will naturally want to expand in different directions. The main reason players break a glove in is to get the glove used to the way the player’s hand naturally functions. If you don’t break it in it won’t follow the rules and you could develop muscle cramps, blisters, or strained fingers.

The second reason you always must break in a baseball glove is simply because you will respect the glove a whole lot more once you have done so. The routine and discipline involved in breaking in your baseball glove makes that glove personal to you. If you look at a glove like it is a store bought item you won’t play as well with it as you would if you look at it with love and affection. Take care of your baseball gloves so that they will in turn take care of you.
