The steam cleaner works by spraying water to the carpet together with a cleaning solution. On top of that is the heating of the carpet before water is introduced to produce steam and enhance the cleaning action. After the water, steam and cleaning solution are done with the actual clean up, the excess water will be vacuumed to make drying easier. Having a two-tank carpet cleaner would mean you can go through with this process uninterrupted as you have a continuous supply of clean water and a ready storage for the suctioned waste water.
Buying a known brand can do a lot in minimizing reliability issues later on. Some good brands are the Bissell steam cleaner and the Shark steam cleaner.
