Choosing Colors for Traditional Room Design
Usually color is a way to update something or make a big impact. In traditional room design it should be used to create a classical sensibility with decor accents. There are a few tried and true color palettes that will really help these kinds of rooms shine. It also just depends on how much traditional lighting you have in the space.
You can go with a very formal feeling with dramatic color. This brings in a sense of richness although you should make sure that it doesn’t feel too dark. Try this in a very classical kind of room such as a formal dining area for added emphasis on the formality. Accent with a lot of metallic colors and crystals.
Add in a touch of black but use it in an elegant way. This color shouldn’t be too in your face but it does help ground the room. You could use it to frame out your artwork or possibly even on a grand piano. This color can seem quite modern so you do need to make sure that you use it on very ornate pieces so that it doesn’t end up feeling too contemporary.
Use subtle colors. This could be a pastel or a medium tone. You can bring in all ranges of blues, greens, peaches, and browns. You can even venture into purples and pinks as long as you style the rest of the room very traditionally. In this case you’d want to focus in on flowers for a feminine look so that the rose colors make sense. When in doubt relate things back to nature.
Go for high end materials. Rich mahogany woods and marble really brings in its own color palette although most people won’t recognize them as colors. This allows you to get a very unique look in your space in a subtle kind of way. Remember to match all of your wood and metal tones in this room.
