A Few Cosmetic Dental Procedures Explored

There are a wide variety of cosmetic dental procedures available, and while some of them are fairly simple, others are downright scary. One of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures is tooth whitening. It has become so common that individuals can now get whiten teeth in the comfort of their own home, although they may not get the same results as they would at the dentist’s office.

Another common and pricier cosmetic dental procedure is getting veneers. Veneers are a dental implant that can be made of porcelain or plastic, and they are glued over the front of your teeth. This procedure is usually sought after by patients who suffer from crooked, chipped, or severely discolored teeth or to correct teeth that may have large or uneven spaces between them.

A cheaper alternative to veneers is tooth bonding. Bonding is when a composite resin is used to fill-in holes and to reshape the teeth. Bonding has been used for years to fill- in gaps and lighten discoloration on teeth. It can also be used to fix teeth that sit crookedly inside the mouth. After the plastic is shaped and colored a high powered light is then used to harden the plastic over the tooth.

If you don’t have much discoloration but a few small chips or dings in your teeth, then a dental contorting and reshaping may be for you. This is where the dentist takes a laser or a sanding drill and sculpts your teeth while smoothing the edges and buffing away the stains. Afterwards the teeth are polished to a healthy shine. The only down side to this procedure is that it can take up to three visits to the dentist’s office before completion.

Sometimes problems are far worse than the above mentioned procedures can fix and more drastic measures must be taken. For instance, an infection in your tooth so deep that it damages the pulp requires a root canal. Why this is considered to be a cosmetic procedure is because the alternative treatment is pulling the tooth which would solve the problem of pain, but would leave a cosmetic blemish in your mouth possibly affecting your smile.
