Tools glorious tools: Drills

If you are a complete novice and have never seriously looked at buying carpentry tools before then it is important to get a little guidance for your purchases.  The best way to achieve this is if you know a friend who does some woodwork or perhaps there is a specialist store in your area where you can ask for advice from the staff. Be prepared to spend a little time gathering information before acquiring your tools. The basic tools would include a hammer, saw, screwdriver, a rule and a drill. Consumable tools might be sandpaper, oil, small knife paring blades and cleaning rags.

The drill choice: cord or cordless?

It is important to source a drill that has different speeds, especially a low torque starting speed.  You will require a relatively slow speed drill when drilling timber and tightening screws but a fast speed or high speed drill for drilling metal plus a hammer action for going through masonry.  Determine whether you want a cordless variety or one that has cord from the main electricity supply.  Hammer action featured drills need a mains power supply for best effect although some cordless drills offer the ‘hammer’ feature but I have never found cordless drills that offer hammer features to be effective.

If you choose the cordless type, make sure that at least two batteries are supplied with the drill, there is nothing worse than going to do a job and finding that the battery needs to be recharged before you can complete the work. Make sure both batteries are fully charged, this may mean preparing them the day before the intended task takes place. This extends the actual working time of the drill as a fully charged second battery is available in the charger. As a rule of thumb the higher the operating voltage of the cordless drill the better the performance. You will pay more for each upward voltage strength increment.
