3 Reasons I love Golden Retriever Training

Training dogs is fun for me. It is a passion and the rewards are so bountiful. Man’s best friend does not happen overnight – the more you put into your relationship with your dog, the more you will get out of it. Isn’t that true for any relationship? Of all the dog breeds that I have owned and trained, the Golden retriever is the one that I love most training. Here are 3 reasons why:

  1. We all love puppies. They are so cute and adorable. This is mainly due to their uninhibited enthusiasm and playful nature. A Golden retriever stays a puppy for life and with it comes that endless enthusiasm and bounce. Yes, they can be trained to be well behave – just look at any guide dog for the blind, but that loving nature shines through no matter what.
  2. Golden retrievers are one of the most intelligent breeds that there is. I know that there are trainers that will disagree with me. If you understand however that this very intelligence results in them getting bored easily, and this results in what might appear to be an inability to be trained, the picture changes. Understand the boredom and cater for it by making the repetitive aspect of training relative short, and you will see a different picture. If you switch to a different aspect of training relatively quickly, you will soon find that you have their full cooperation and attention again.
  3. Golden retrievers can not only sense your mood, but will react to them. Have you ever felt sad or depressed and then have your Golden retriever stare at you with those sad eyes and mournful look that says ‘I am so sad with you, how can I help?’ Often this results in the mood lifting, or, if it doesn’t, your Golden retriever will quietly be with you, unassuming, supporting until you are ok.
  4. It is not accidental that so many movies have been made with Golden retrievers as the star. If you have ever owned or trained one, it makes perfect sense.
