How to Use A Carpet Cleaning Machine

The concept behind a carpet cleaning machine is simple. First, you put a cleaning solution in the clean solution reservoir. Some of the higher end carpet shampoo machines will also have a small reservoir to put in anti-foaming agents. The machine will mix the anti-foam and the shampoo in the proper proportions to avoid too much soap in your carpet. You might not think this is an issue if you use a high end carpet shampoo and follow the directions. However, even the best foaming carpet shampoo can need a little anti-foam occasionally.

When carpet shampoo machines are turned on, they heat up the cleaning solution and spray it out at high pressure into the area of the shampooer where the brushes are. The brushes then work the cleaning solution into the carpet as you move the shampooer back and forth over the floor. There are actually two types of brushing systems. There are fixed brush systems where your need to move the carpet shampoo machine back and forth to get scrubbing action on the carpet. There are also rotating brush systems where the brushes turn and scrub when the machine is stationary and when it is moving. In general, the rotating systems work better.

At the same time that the cleaning solution is being sprayed out, high powered suction is sucking away all the dirty water and depositing it in a dirty reservoir. When you have used all of the clean shampoo solution then you need to stop and empty the dirty water reservoir. I always rinse out the dirty reservoir before continuing, but I suppose that step is not necessary. The next step is to start over. You repeat this process until you have shampooed the entire carpet.

It does not take any training or special skills to use a carpet cleaning machine. Instead, it just takes time and patience.
