What is motor oil viscosity?
When choosing a type of motor oil to us in your car’s engine there are many different choices available but with some simple guidelines it becomes much easier to decide on the best oil car.
I always prefer to use a known brand of motor oil. If your car manufacturer recommends a specific brand then I would use it, even if it is a little more expensive. In your owner’s handbook you’ll also find information about the viscosity of oil your car needs. Viscosity is a measure of the thickness of oil, it determines how easy it is, or difficult, for oil to be circulated around the engine in hot or cold conditions. The purpose of oil is to lubricate your engine’s moving parts. To do this, the inside the engine, including the moving parts, have to be coated in oil. When the engine is started oil needs to be quickly be pumped from the oil pan through the engine to start lubricating. In cold conditions oil gets thicker, and as we know thicker liquids are harder to pump, they don’t flow and coat surfaces as readily as thinner liquids. If you have an oil pressure gauge you will see it slowly rising when the car is first started as the oil gets warmer and the pressure increases.
That’s why the labeling on a container of oil has numbers and letters to indicate the viscosity. If there is only one number then this is known as a single grade oil. If there are two numbers it is a multi-grade oil. So for example 20W-30 on a label indicates in cold weather, ie winter (that’s what the W stands for), the oil has the viscosity of 20. But after the engine has been running the oil gets hotter and the viscosity changes to 30. Additives are used to change the viscosity. Because of these additives a car can use the same motor oil all year round. There is no need to change oil in summer and winter. A good place to find more information about motor oil is the oil pressure gauge guide blog website.
