Why You Should Never Let the Cops Search Your Stuff

We aren’t all angels. In fact, probably none of us are. If you’ve never done anything illegal, or if you are telling someone right now that you haven’t while reading this article, you’re a liar. If you were in court you’d be committing perjury. The difference between many successful people and unsuccessful people is the unsuccessful people got caught doing what they were doing (or were dumb enough not to ask for a DUI attorney when they got caught). But let me tell you, if you learn one simple rule you can probably save yourself a lot of trouble.

Never let the cops search your stuff.

That’s it. Pretty simple, right? Well, it’s simple now, but out there in the real world it’s pretty tough. The cops don’t just take no for an answer. They make you work for it (though if you just said unequivocally ”I want to talk to my attorney, you’d fare pretty good).

For example, I had a guy in my office the other day, hypothetically, of course, who is accused of DUI. He was meeting with me because, well, I’m a Seattle DUI lawyer. The guy was pulled over for doing something stupid. After he was pulled over, though, the cop asked the guy if he could search his vehicle. The guy, wisely, says no. So the cop says he’ll call in the drug dog and they can come in and check out the situation. At that time the guy says “okay, fine, whatever, you can look.” Then he signs the consent form. Next thing you know he’s charged with more than just a DUI.

Why would you do that?

Here’s the thing, the cops want you to give your consent. If you don’t give your consent, then they have to make sure they are respecting your Constitutional rights. Then they have to think. They hate thinking because most of the time what makes sense to them isn’t proper. That means the evidence stays out of the case.

But if you give your consent your cooked (at least way more cooked than you might otherwise be). That waives all your rights and the cops can do whatever they want. The moment you give your consent all of those great theoretical legal arguments I have at my disposal go out the window.

If you ever find yourself in trouble, just say no. Say no to talking to the cops, and say no to letting the cops search your stuff. Just trust me on this.
