Probiotic Yogurts: Are They Really Working?
Probiotic yogurts are appearing everywhere today, and many people are wondering if they actually work. Before discussing the actual yogurt, it is important to understand what a probiotic is. There are many bacterias that are actually good for the body. They have strains of bacteria that give health benefits to the body when eaten as part of a regular diet and in large enough amounts. A lot of research is starting to reveal that probiotics relieves the digestive tract for those with stomach issues.
Probiotics have been popular in Asia and Europe for many years and are only a recent phenomenon in the United States. For example, Dannon’s Activia is a pretty new probiotic yogurt in the U.S. that has been sold overseas since 1987. Even though the health benefits of probiotics bacteria is not questioned, many researchers are questioning if foods with it are actually effective.
There are several probiotic yogurts, but Dannon’s Activia products made over $100 million in the United States when it was first released. The yogurt has a type of bacteria that lives through the digestion, arriving in the colon as a living culture. Dannon tells consumers that this will help with maintaining a healthy digestive tract.
Many consumers turn to The FDA, which does not really guide them on this, only policing food packages not to state they cure any diseases. Due to it’s relatively newness, the FDA has not done enough testing. Other researchers are claiming that the current foods on the market packaging probiotics are just not reliable yet.
So it is safe to say that as of now, there is not enough research proving nor disproving if probiotic yogurts actually do work. The best thing to do is to do further research into the type of yogurt being purchased and see if any studies have been done on it. There is nothing to lose by using a probiotic yogurt versus one without it; just take a supplemental probiotic pill if truly looking for the benefits. Hopefully more research will be done in the future. Yet with anything new, the research usually comes later.
