Dealing with Severe Constipation

Constipation is a condition that makes it difficult to have regular bowel movements. There is a build up of waste, in the colon, which prevents the bowel from moving through the system freely. Normal bowel elimination, on average, would consist of two or three times each day. However, it is different in some people, who may have one to two bowel movements a day.

Severe constipation is symptomatic of having even greater difficulty in extracting waste from the body. The fecal matter becomes impacted in the colon and can cause a bowel obstruction, and other problems.

There are a number of reasons that can be responsible for severe constipation. It can come from: taking certain medications, milk, dehydration, lack of fiber, diseases related to the colon, not having an active lifestyle, irritable bowel syndrome, pregnancy, a generally poor diet, too much caffeine, taking too many laxatives, severe illnesses that requires bed rest for long periods of time, and other causes.

The symptoms of severe constipation are: a feeling of being bloated or full, severe lower abdominal pain and cramping on the left side, stool or fecal matter being small, sharp, and hard when released, excessive gas, swollen abdomen, fecal impaction, nausea, sudden urges to urinate or defecate, and sometimes brief symptoms of diarrhea from loose stool.

Severe constipation should be treated by a medical doctor who can determine the cause and proceed with an appropriate treatment plan. Other alternatives would be to drink clear liquids, cut down on red meat, eat vegetables and fruits, that are high in natural fiber, take long walks, exercise, ride a bike, cut out caffeine, alcohol and other stimulants, talk to a doctor about medications that can cause constipation.

Scheduling an appointment to see a doctor and making adjustments in the diet and lifestyle will help to resolve problems with severe constipation. Learn more about how to relieve baby constipation or high fiber foods for constipation to avoid severe constipation.
