How to take care of your dog kennel

Once you have carefully considered which type of dog kennel would best suit your dog and your family, researched where to get the best price and finally made a purchase you may think that the only thing left to do is find a place for it and introduce your dog to his new home.  However, just like any other piece of furniture, you will need to take care of it if you want it to last for any length of time.  The type of care required will depend mostly on variety of kennel that you have bought.

A plastic dog kennel is relatively easy to take care of.  Being so lightweight you can easily carry it to somewhere with a water supply (a hose in the back garden or the shower will do fine) and sluice it down.  Any clumps of fur or dirt will simply wash away.  Use some sort of anti-bacterial cleaner to kill any bacteria which may have multiplied but make sure that you rinse it thoroughly afterwards so that your dog isn’t affected if he licks it.  Other than cleaning, plastic kennels require little other care.

A crate with galvanised dog run attached will need to be cleaned in situ as they are very difficult to manoeuvre.  Use a stiff brush to clean the metal bars, looking carefully for any bars which may be coming loose due to rough use by your dog.  A snapped bar could be lethal so it is vital that you check them regularly.  Also keep the gate well oiled so that it remains easy to open and close.  The main issue, as with all metal objects left out in all weathers, is rust.  Though the metal is coated you may find that over time small patches of rust appear which should be quickly treated with rust killer to stop them spreading.

A wooden dog kennel is probably the most difficult to clean in the sense that bacteria can build up in the wood itself which is difficult to just rinse out.  You will need to get on your hands and knees and use a scrubbing brush in every corner to ensure that it is completely clean.  It is also important to treat the wood annually so that it doesn’t split and weather after so much exposure to the elements.
