The Professional Trumpet
For the first few years of middle school band, the “student trumpet,” purchased used, handed down by a family member, or rented from the local music store, is most likely adequate for the beginning student. This is because it is possible that, after a year or two, the student may decide they no longer wish to continue playing the trumpet and may choose to no longer participate in band at all. Investing a substantial amount of money in an instrument that may end up being only a passing fancy is not financially practical for most parents.
Once the student has played an instrument in band for several years, it can probably be assumed their interest is consistent and will continue throughout the high school years and possibly beyond. At this point, the student’s parents may wish to upgrade their child’s instrument and will want to look for an instrument that will not only sound better but whose construction will ensure it will hold up better as well – possibly for many years.
The advantages of purchasing a professional trumpet over a mass-produced and cheaper model are many. For instance, the more expensive trumpet will likely be hand-made. The reason this is important is because of the hand-lapping of the valves and slides and the hand-hammering of the bells that takes place with the higher-quality, handmade instrument. These processes ensure a better sounding and more efficiently operating instrument.
Another advantage in purchasing a trumpet of professional quality is the plating process involved. The higher quality trumpet will likely have silver plating, which has a much higher durability than the lacquer plating the more economically manufactured trumpet will have.
For the dedicated player, investing in a trumpet of professional quality can guarantee many years of successful playing. For most, the monetary investment in such an instrument is worth the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from playing an instrument of quality construction and hand-made precision.
