The Top Two Fly Fishing Tips

Sometimes, fly fishing seems as if it’s all about the art. However, if you spend a small amount of time thinking about the science of fish, what makes them tick, it can pay huge dividends at the end of your fishing trip. Trout are a lot like humans. There are some essentials that make their lives run a little smoother. They like easy access to food, protection from predators and the elements. Combined with a quiet living environment these individual concepts all adds up to prime trout habitat.

Protection

Look for sunken logs where a trout can hide underneath or behind. Large rocks play a big part in the hide and seek game. A well placed rock in a fast moving current offers a quiet place where fish can hide without being banged up by the fast current. Any object that will give protection from an airborne predator or from the water could be a prime hiding spot.

Has a fast moving current undercut a bank? Undercuts make wonderful spaces for a trout to hide, protection from birds that want to eat him, while he waits for the current to float the food right past him. Remember the sun as you look for protection because trout don’t like the bright sun. If you think about predators and how fish avoid them, your time on the water will become more productive.

Patience

Take your time when scanning the environment for possible trout areas. Turn the water into small quadrants and slowly scan each quadrant. Are there any trees that overhang the water? If you’re in a hurry to cast your line it can lead to mistakes like overshooting the back-swing and hitting the water with your line spooking the fish.

A little patience when stalking protection gives big advantages over the fish.
