Is a Toy guitar right for your child?

There are many different reasons why parents by toy guitars for their children, unfortunately one of the main reasons stems from a general lack of understanding about what a toy guitar is. This article aims to clear up this matter once and for all, the following paragraphs will explain to you what you can and cannot expect from a toy guitar.

Learning the guitar is hard, there’s no way around that. The emergence of the toy guitar was partly due to the frustration many children felt when trying to play their favourite song s, the sad fact is these kids wanted to act like rock stars but were hindered by the steep learning curve. The toy guitar aimed to stop this frustration, much like guitar hero today, toy guitars allowed kids to feel the same ‘buzz’ of playing a song and running around pretending to be Slash without having to undergo the ordeal of actually learning to play.

A toy guitar is not an instrument, it may be a musical tool which can be used to develop children’s ears and improvising skills, but the fact is that purchasing this will not make them play the guitar any better. This is a big mistake many parents make, they assume toy guitars are just cheap guitars and it can be frustrating when it turns out this isn’t the case. These instruments are meant to be fun, if you’re only buying the product for your kid’s enjoyment then that’s fine, I had great fun playing these toys as a kid, they were easy to get to grips with and made you feel like a pop star. I personally would buy a toy electric guitar, their built in amps mean this product already comes with everything you need to get going.

One final note, if you actually want a mini guitar for your child to learn on then I would recommend going for a junior guitar. These are just a smaller version of the real thing and are what many people would think of when they hear the term toy guitar.
