Types of Meat Grinders

If you would like to grind your own meat at home to improve the quality of your food, you will be faced with a choice of a number of different types of meat grinder. Each have their pros and cons, but in most cases there will be one which it makes more sense for you to buy.

Manual Meat Grinders

These are the types of meat grinders that have been around for centuries. You clamp the machine to a table or counter top, put the meat in the hopper at the top and turn the crank, forcing the meat through the sharp worm screw and grinding plates so that it can be extruded at the other end as ground meat. These grinders are simple to operate, however, they do require a fair amount of elbow grease, especially if you have a lot of meat to grind.

Electric Meat Grinders

Electric meat grinders take much of the effort out of grinding your own meat as the power, which you would otherwise have to supply via the hand crank, is provided by a motor. Whereas you might be able to process a pound or two of meat a minute with a manual meat grinder, these electric machines can get through as much as four to six pounds. The main disadvantage is the cost, as they cost way more than a manual machine (about three to five times as much) and of course, with an appliance there is more that can go wrong so you may need to replace your meat grinder every few years.

Meat Grinder Attachments

If you have a stand mixer, chances are there is a meat grinder attachment that you will be able to buy for it. There is certainly both a Cuisinart and a KitchenAid meat grinder attachment for example. These take the effort out of grinding meat so there is no handle to crank and they reduce the cost of buying an electric meat grinder, as they use the motor from the mixer instead of a stand alone one. The only problems would be if you wanted to grind a huge quantity of meat (when a stand alone model is best) or if you didn’t already own a mixer!
